How to Choose the Right Slings & Rigging
When selecting lifting slings, the primary considerations are working load limit (WLL), sling material, and configuration. Working load limits must account for the weight of materials being lifted and any dynamic loading factors. The angle of lift significantly impacts the rated capacity - loads at 45° angles reduce the effective WLL by approximately 30% compared to vertical lifts.
Material selection depends on application requirements. Synthetic web slings offer good load protection and flexibility but are sensitive to heat and chemicals. Alloy chain slings provide excellent durability and heat resistance up to 400°F but are heavier and can damage delicate loads. Wire rope slings balance cost and performance but require regular inspection for broken strands and kinking.
