How to Choose the Right Adhesives & Glue
When selecting industrial adhesives, first consider the substrate materials being bonded and the environmental conditions. Metal-to-metal bonds may require different adhesives than plastic-to-plastic or mixed material applications. Factor in temperature range, moisture exposure, UV exposure, and chemical resistance requirements. Surface energy of materials (high or low) significantly impacts adhesive selection and performance.
Key performance specifications to evaluate include shear strength, peel strength, and temperature resistance. For tapes, consider the backing material (PVC, EVA foam, etc.), adhesive type (acrylic, rubber-based), and thickness. Electrical tapes should meet relevant UL/CSA standards and voltage ratings. Check cure times and application temperature ranges, especially for liquid adhesives.
Application method and ease of use are important considerations for maintenance efficiency. Some adhesives require surface preparation, primers, or specific application tools. Consider working time (open time before bonding), cure time, and whether the adhesive allows for repositioning. For high-volume applications, evaluate coverage rates and cost per square foot of bonded area.
